This week sees a new expo at MAC, Marseille’s Museum of Contemporary Art.
Hip-Hop started in the South Bronx, where, surrounded by economic deprivation, the young generation developed creative ways to party, dance, paint the urban environment and challenge the establishment.
It spread, district by district, across New York, animating the metro, nightclubs and trendy art galleries.
By the 80s, the culture had crossed the Atlantic and became popular in France, especially in Marseille. The expo will cover all disciplines – music, fashion, dance, cinema, the written word, graffiti, tags and photography. Until 14th Jan 2018.
MAC also has an intriguing permanent collection which starts around 1960, continuing the narrative from the Musée Cantini. More here: http://culture.marseille.fr/node/637
It is situated outside the town centre, south of Parc Borely. It’s probably easiest to drive there – parking is available on the roads outside. Then afterwards, you can drive down to the beach for a picnic. A nice outing!
