It was on a trip down to the coast that we encountered roadworks on the A52 near Fuveau and read that the bridge being constructed was ‘for animals crossing’. I thought this must be for a divided farm, but no, it is to be an ‘eco-pont’, one of 4 being constructed locally.
It will aid the safe crossing of roebuck deer, sangliers, foxes and others which are not in my dictionary such as: ‘ le petit murin, le Minioptère de Schreibers, le grand Rhinolophe, des insectes tels que le grand capricorne, zygène cendrée ou lucane cerf-volant’.
The bridges will all have eco-friendly wooden barriers and be planted with animal-enticing vegetation. At a cost of 18 million euros for the four.
I’m sure it’s dangerous to have sangliers charging across roads, but would they really use this one bridge, along the whole length of the A52? And can this sort of expenditure be justified instead of fences……I’d be interested if anyone knows if these animal crossings work.
Anyway, it’s going ahead and the autroroute will be closed on 3rd May from 21:00 to 05:00hrs.
Hi Lynne: the Canadian government (read tax payers) spent millions on animal crossings for large beasts, including bears, in the Banff National Park. Apparently, the structures work to save the animals and drivers from accidents.
