The director of the Musée Picasso at Antibes will be in town on Saturday 11th March to deliver a talk on the artist, ‘Carte Blanche: Picasso ne meurt jamais’.
The Musée Picasso itself is well worth a visit, and now is a good time to do so as Antibes gets so busy in the tourist season. The collection is housed in the Chateau Grimaldi which has been recently restored, beautifully. It’s all a far cry from 1946 when Picasso worked there for 6 months, when materials were in short supply after the war. So he used paper, wooden panels, fibrocement and boat-paint to produce or decorate paintings, ceramics and drawings, most of which were left to the town.
It was a period of great happiness for the artist as his new lover Francoise Gilot was pregnant and his genius was in full flow. Visitors to the museum can see all these works, some hanging in the top floor studio where he worked.
It’s a fabulous location, right on the seafront and it is a delight to walk out on to the sculpture terrace to see works by Joan Miro and Germaine Richier.
The renovation and rehang has transformed this museum. Details here: http://www.antibes-juanlespins.com/culture/musee-Picasso
It is closed on Mondays and also over lunchtime. You may be lucky and find a space to park nearby but it may be safer to leave the car in one of the big underground car-parks and walk. The chateau is in the old town and the streets around are very narrow.
But back to the talk in Aix!
It takes place on Saturday 11th March at 18:30 at the Caumont Centre d’Art. Book online…http://www.caumont-centredart.com/fr/picasso-ne-meurt-jamais. 20/15 euros per person.
