Next year’s theme for the popular son-et-lumiere show at Carrieres de Lumiere at Les Baux de Provence is…‘Bosch, Breughel, Arcimboldo from the fantastic to the wonderful’.
‘This show explores the fantastic and wonderful world painted by the 16th-century artists. The first part of this journey is dedicated to Hieronymus Bosch where we can discover his emblematic triptychs and the characters that people his work. The next part is devoted to the Brueghel dynasty. They excelled in portraying the country-side and the lives of its peasants. The final part of the show plunges us into the fantasy world of Arcimboldo.’
For those who haven’t visited before, these shows take place in an abandoned limestone quarry with huge rough walls – giant digital images of artworks are projected at speed across the interior – they even carpet the floor. Music, often specially commissioned, accompanies the narrative.
Artistic Director Gianfranco Iannuzzi explains: ‘I would like to offer visitors an alternative cultural experience where they are no longer passive spectators but actively enter the very heart of the artwork, as if the latter were an immense stage and the visitor an active participant in the performance. When I see children playing with the images on the ground or couples dancing to the music at the quarry, I feel we have met our objective.’
The show begins on 5th March 2017.
The current show, ‘Chagall, Midsummer Night’s Dreams runs until 8th January’.
