Fascinating to learn that, from early next week, an American will be the new owner of the famous Olympique de Marseille football club.
Frank McCourt Jr, the son of a wealthy Boston property company, also worked in the construction and property business in the Boston area. He moved to LA in 2004 where he bought the LA Dodgers, team, stadium and all. Following its sale in 2012, he took over the LA Marathon which he still owns. Very much into sport, he used to row for his university and was then a hockey and baseball coach for his 4 boys.
But why l’OM?
He and his new wife love Europe and had wanted to move here – then they attended a wedding in Aix. He met the owner of l’OM and found out that she wanted to sell….
It means a lot to him as his father landed in Provence in 1944 and was one of the troops involved in the liberation of Marseille. ‘Each time I walk by the Vieux Port’, he said, ‘I think of him’.
Let’s hope he can work some magic in Marseille.
Allez-l’OM!
