There’s a vernissage on Friday, the opening of the ‘Camoin’ show at the Granet on Saturday, and paintings in the streets of Ventabren on Sunday. Here are the details…
Local artist Jill Steenhuis will be holding her annual exhibition showing her paintings along with the sculptures of her husband and son. Jill has been influenced by the work of Cézanne and loves to paint around the Aix countryside where she lives. I visit her show every year and find her colourful works, and the sculptures, very uplifting. The vernissage is at 18:00, Friday 10th June at La Galerie de la Prevote which is behind the cathedral. The exhibition runs until 26th June.
Saturday and Sunday see the opening weekend at the Musée Granet for ‘Camoin dans sa lumiere’. Charles Camoin, a Marseille-born artist who trained in Paris, was sent to Aix in 1901 as part of his military service. He managed to get to meet Cézanne who took the young artist under his wing. Camoin was a life-long friend of Matisse, Marquet and Manguin and the painters spent hours together both in Paris and working at various spots along the Mediterranean coast. This looks to be a lovely exhibition.
There will be animations at the museum all weekend and tours (in French) at 10:30, 11:30, 14, 15 and 16:00. There is a free booklet for over 6s, with games to help them discover the works. There will also be workshops both afternoons for the 6-12 year olds. Parental alert though – Camoin had a penchant for painting racy ladies so you may want to see the exhibition first! http://www.museegranet-aixenprovence.fr/nc/accueil.html
Then, on Sunday you can wander through the delightful village of Ventabren and see the paintings of local artists. Thanks to Marilyn for this info. Read on…
