As part of its cost-cutting programme, BA is to stop its service for Unaccompanied Minors (UMs), under 12-year olds travelling without parents.
According to today’s Independent newspaper, this hasn’t been widely publicised but no new bookings are being taken.
They will still accept 12-18 year olds alone, but the under 12s must have an adult 16+ with them.
The airline says that demand for the service has declined with a drop of 21% last year. It charged £90 ($125) for domestic/European flights and £108 ($150) for long-haul on top of the fare.
It really was a boon to working parents. Le fils Aixcentric used to travel down to join his grandparents in Nice and loved being whisked off to a separate kids lounge with games and bowls of sweets. Another sign of the times.
Meanwhile Virgin are still offering a UM service, not that that’s much help for families here, in transit to/from Marseille….
