Last summer, I posted about a trip taken down to Pointe-Rouge (Marseille), by navette from the Vieux Port, for lunch by the sea. (https://aixcentric.com/2014/06/24/marseille-lunch-pieds-dans-leau/). It was a lovely excursion.
Now I read that things are changing down there.
The restaurant La Bonne Franquette, next door to O’ Pedalo which I reviewed, is being demolished. (Circled in the photo). There was a fire at the end of the season and the authorities are paying to clear the site as part of their policy of restoring the ‘domaine public maritime’.
Apparently the restaurants, which have temporary trading agreements, have received notification that, from 2016, their premises should be ‘installations démontables’. There was recently a TV documentary on French TV showing how many Riviera cafés and restaurants are affected by this legislation. Their premises accordingly are now made from decking on the sands, temporary wooden buildings and lots of pots of bamboo to stake out their territory – all easily removed at the end of each summer.
So the beach at Pointe Rouge is due for a tidy-up. The navette service normally starts end March/early April; so if you decide to have lunch down there, perhaps check on what’s open first?
