Getting UK TV in the south of France is a complicated business these days so perhaps you have missed the BBC’s 6-part adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s prize-winning novels ‘Wolf Hall’ and ‘Bringing Up the Bodies’.
When ‘Wolf Hall’ began last month, it attracted 3.9million viewers, the most successful opening for a BBC2 drama in a decade. But the final episode last week had only 2.3million, meaning a third of the original audience had given up.
It is certainly very dark – both literally as the production tried to emulate the candle-light and shadows of Tudor interiors, but also morally as Thomas Cromwell descends into menacing and sadistic behaviour in service of his master Henry VIII. The acting as you would expect from this cast is superb as are the palaces, country houses and gardens of 16th century England. You can judge for yourself from tomorrow when the DVD becomes available on Amazon UK. Lots of background here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p02gfy02
Also available in DVD from tomorrow if you missed them on the big screen, ‘Pride’, ‘Mr Turner’ and ‘Nightcrawler’, all of which have been nominated for various awards recently.
