La Patisserie Riederer has gone into liquidation after 234 years’ making cakes in Aix. It was taken over by la Chocolaterie de Puyricard in 2013 when it first had financial problems. The Puyricard company made a large investment in the patisserie in the belief that their product ranges were complementary. They also said that they wanted to keep the 18 employees and their savoir-faire. But to no avail.
Riederer was a established in 1780 by a Swiss family and the current owner, Philippe Segond was ‘meilleur ouvrier de France’. You can see him here constructing a buche de Noel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsI8PQ4AfDI
More chocolate can be enjoyed this coming weekend at the Salon du Chocolat de Marseille. Chocolatiers and patissiers are gathering from all over France to show their wares and also give demos on making sweets, macaroons and calissons. At Parc Chanot, Friday Feb 27-Sunday March 1st. Friday 14-22:00; Saturday and Sunday 10:00-19:00.
To keep up-to-date with matters gastronomical, what better than the new issue of A Table, published by La Provence? It’s a mine of info on new products, seasonal foods and local restaurants. And this issue features even more chocolate. A bargain at 2,80€.
Re Riederer :
Philippe Second was alway its pastry chef, and took over the Aix boutiques – e.g. the one at the top of Cours Mirabeau, which changed its name to Philippe Second in 2013. The wonderful pastries and chocolates didn’t change, because he’d always been the one making them.
Is that going into liquidation, now ? Or just the “Riederer” branded outlets?
