The ‘Marseille Eternelle’ exhibition at the Musee Regards de Provence ends on March 1st, and if you catch this, you will also see the new ‘Lumieres du Sud’ show on the floor above. Beautiful paintings in an elegant gallery, all for 6€!
The Marseille that the visitor has just walked through to get to the museum doesn’t really look all that different to the views by these 19th century painters. If you know Marseille, you will have fun location-spotting. Granted the ‘Transbordeur’ bridge (in the Manguin painting’ centre) no longer exists, but in fact there is a movement to reinstate one across the Vieux Port.

Pierre Ambrogiani was a local colourist. His Corsican family lived in the Panier – right behind the gallery.
Upstairs, there are 100+ works in the ‘Lumieres du Sud’ show, ranging from the traditional views of dusty and desolate Provence by Loubin and Guigou, right up to contemporary photography and mixed media works by the likes of J. J. Surian whose ‘Plage du Prado’ collage includes a kid’s plastic sandal. This exhibition runs until 6th September.
Musee Regards de Provence is across the road from MUCEM and is open daily 10-18:00hrs. Good roof-top café.
