Continuing on my quest to see the photos in the Phot’Aix programme, I decided to stop wandering up side streets and concentrate my efforts on the Cours Mirabeau while shopping. The Hotel des Augustins has about 8 small dark photos in a dark reception area (venue 18)… could hardly see them…and the bookshop Goulard (venue 14) didn’t seem to have any.
But I struck gold in papeterie Michel. They have displayed the photos in their framing workshop which is part of the ancient Carmelite convent and worth a visit in its own right. Berbers are the subject of Daniel Berta’s work while the west coast of Sweden stimulated Jerome Acquisto to produce moody black and white shots in ‘The Road to Bohuslan’.
The ‘Carnet de Voyage’ series continues at the travel agency Ailleurs Voyages where Christelle Baunez photographs of Tibet can be seen.
But maybe my favourite, and very accessible, are the wonderful simple portraits of Indian people by Anne-Marine Rebillout which you can see easily and daily in the foyer of the Renoir cinema.
These were worth the quest. The Phot’Aix programme is running until 15th November, all over town. An excellent concept if a little bumpy in execution.
