When a message popped into the Aixcentric mail-box saying that a new boutique of frozen yoghurts had opened in town and that, on opening the door, ‘you will be instantly transported to the beaches of California’, of course I had to investigate.
And frozen yoghurt not being a staple of our diet in my native Yorkshire, I took along an American friend for a professional opinion.
California Bliss was started by friends Kylie Schuyler (US) and Danielle Ahajot (Fr); the boutique in Aix is their starting point but they have plans to open next year in Saint-Tropez and Paris.
Different-flavoured frozen yoghurts are offered in sizes small to very large, and then you can add toppings (lots to choose from), sauce and finally syrups.
I sampled the ‘delice du moment’ which was lichi yoghurt, topped with fresh mango and passion-fruit sauce. It was delicious and well worth the 4€50. My American taster happily demolished her chocolate and fruit concoction.
The owners are also supporting Global Girls Rising, a charity they have founded to improve the schooling of girls from impoverished backgrounds. Projects are ongoing in places from Jordan (with Syrian refugees) to LA and Harlem.
Verdict: A friendly place to drop in for a refreshing snack; a good alternative to meeting for a coffee.
Details: 47 rue Espariat. http://www.california-bliss.fr/ Open Mon-Sat 10:00-22:30; Sunday 15:00-22:00.
