A quick recommendation for lunch in Arles if you are visiting the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh Arles (last post).
We very much enjoyed the Jardin des Arts which is in a 13th century cloister nearby. Clever lighting illuminates the elegant vaulted ceiling. One side of the room is the original rough stone while the other has glass in the arches allowing diners to view the courtyard and outside eating area.
The menu is Italian-inspired with pastas and salads – we had the dish of the day, a gnocchi in a delicious tomato sauce served with cheese, and accompanied by salad. Their dessert list was very tempting, including their self-proclaimed ‘fameux fondant au chocolat’ which you have to order at the very start as it takes 20 minutes to make.Main courses from 11€ so very affordable. Nice atmosphere.
Restaurant Jardin des Arts is at 38 rue de la Republique. Open Tues-Sat, 12:00-14.15, and 19:00 onwards. Details: http://jardindesarts13.free.fr/
