Wednesday, 1st Jan, sees the opening of ‘Nymphomaniac’, the latest film from Danish director Lars von Trier who says that he was inspired by Proust. Various actresses including Charlotte Gainsburg play the central character whose erotic development is charted. ‘Perplexing, perposterous and utterly fascinating’, said the Guardian. Also stars Jamie Bell who has obviously come some way from Billy Elliot!
The following week, 8th Jan, we get a chance to see ‘Philomena’ which is an Oscar-contender and was enormously popular in the UK this autumn. It’s the story of a political journalist who picks up the story of a woman’s search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent. Both Steve Coogan and Judi Dench are said to be brilliant in the lead roles and I look forward to seeing this. In the same week, we have ‘Yves Saint Laurent’ a bio-pic on the brilliant French fashion designer.
Telerama begins on 15th January. This is a chance, at cinemas throughout France, to see the 14 best films from 2013. It costs 3€ per session if you have a voucher from the magazine. Details on the Aix cinemas’ website: http://www.lescinemasaixois.com/films/festival-telerama
Another Oscar contender comes our way on 22nd Jan. 12 Years a Slave has been extremely well received by the critics. It is a British-American historical drama based on the autobiography of a free negro who was kidnapped and sold into slavery. It sounds a very gruelling film but apparently with some magnificent acting.
And then the following week, 29th Jan….blimey….the Nymphomaniac is back! this time, it’s Volume II. Reviews, posters and trailers here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2525466/Nymphomaniac-repels–I-love-First-review-Lars-von-Triers-movie.html
Something for everyone this January at the cinema in Aix!
