What a beautiful poster this is!
I am often struck by the quality of the graphics, photography and composition of posters for the most local and transient of events in Provence. And this is a case in point.
It sounds as though it will be a wonderful Christmas concert – further details on http://academie-bach-aix.fr.
Now for a couple of exhibitions which may be of interest.
The first is ‘Sainte Victoire et son Prieuré’ which was on earlier this year at the Maison de Sainte Victoire. It’s the story of the people who, through the ages, lived at the top of the mountain, how they managed to feed themselves and also how they constructed the buildings up there. I found it fascinating. On at the Museum d’Histoire Naturelle in Aix until 2nd Feb.
The second highlights the painting of Achille Emperaire who was a contemporary of Cézanne
but who lacked his success. Sixty works have been gathered from private collectors and are on show at the Atelier Cézanne and also the Galerie Alain Paire in rue Puits Neufs. (Until 26 Jan and 30 Dec respectively).
Emperaire is probably best known from the large portrait that Cézanne painted of his friend who was born a hunchback. He had a pretty tough life, at times living in the streets. Born in Aix at 16 rue Emeric David, he spent time in Paris, but settled at 2 place des Precheurs from 1873 onwards, rarely leaving Aix again. Cézanne’s biographer, John Rewald, wrote that he was ‘able to loop out of Cézanne’s influence and his work denotes a surprising personality and a most peculiar strand.’
I don’t know his work so look forward to seeing both expos – details here:
