Ironman Aix
C Comme Aix – Photos
Events at Book In Bar
Ironman Aix: On Sunday 22nd, thousands of amazing athletes will be swimming the lake at Peyrolles, cycling a torturous route to Aix then running 13km around town. Parking restrictions start Saturday and road closures take effect from 6:00 Sunday, in the centre of town and around the Torse. For more details, check out the website: http://ironmanpaysdaix.com/ It’s fun to watch in town and cheer the athletes on; plus this year there are lots of stalls in the cours Mirabeau selling all manner of sportswear: flip-flops, goggles, even ladies’ swimsuits with the London Underground on the front. Well you never know. There is also a stand selling Volvos – are they sponsors? I have never seen cars displayed on the cours before.
C Comme Aix opened today at the tourist office. It shows photos of Aix by the official town photographer Jean-Claude Carbonne. He has been in this post for years now and must have thousands of shots to choose from. They have decided to focus on the cultural highlights of the town – the theatres, the ballet, street performances. The standard is wonderful – beautiful compositions….but…I’m sorry to whinge, there are no labels telling visitors what’s what. OK for those of us who live in Aix and recognise the various subjects, but for people from outside, ie most of the visitors to the tourist office, no explanations. I hope they add some because the photos are lovely. Exhibition runs til 10th October.
Book In Bar: Next Thursday, 26th at 17:30 , the Book Club will be discussing a novel by John Grisham, ‘The Street Lawyer’. Then the following day, Friday 27th, also 17:30, the Poetry Corner will celebrate the life and work of the Irish poet Seamus Heaney who died in August. ‘Poetry has lost a beautiful soul of powerful intellect and warm humanity and Ireland has lost a man who made a difference. May he rest in peace and smile on us as we try to find our way through poetry’, they say. BTW, to give us all time to read up, the October book choice (on the 31st) is ‘Yellow Birds’ by Kevin Powers.
Expo Alert! The lovely Suzanne Lalique-Haviland exhibition at the Musee des Tapisseries ends Sunday. (See previous post). There is also an intriguingly strange exhibition by Aicha Hamu at the Pavillon de Vendome…so intriguing that it will get a separate post when I’ve figured it out!!
Little correction: the runners in Sunday’s Ironman race will cover 13 miles, not kilometers. It is in fact 21,1 km, half a marathon distance, after swimming 1,9 km and bicycling 90 km. Iron men – and women! – indeed.
Thank you”
