Sad news from the Vieux Port in that Le Marseillois – the old boat transformed into a floating restaurant – sank this morning. Only the masts can still be seen. (See photo right).
No-one seems to know why as the boat was secured with no public access.
It was built in Valencia in the early years of the twentieth century and spent its working life carrying goods from Barcelona to Marseille via the Balearics. In the seventies, it was discovered, a wreck on a beach in Majorca, and a group of naval historians in Marseille acquired it. They did a marvellous job of restoring it and transforming it into a restaurant.
I hope it can be refloated and saved yet again!
On a lighter note, here is a wonderful menu tweeted by writer Stephen Clarke (A Year in the Merde, Talk to the Snail) who is a vegetarian living in Paris.
The vegetarian sandwich offered by this establishment is the same as the salmon one but with added crab! Priceless!
How very sad, thank you so much for keeping us informed
Still don’t know how it happened….
How very sad.
Very interesting — and so is your blog. It’s full of great info on doings in the area. Even though I don’t live in Aix, I find it very helpful. You obviously do a lot of research. Thank you for all your time and hard work.
Thank you for the kind comment – I find the blog fun to research and write!
how sad ! I was there looking at it a few weeks ago,it was part of the Vieux Port ….
Thanks for your blog…I missed it during summer !
Yes we wandered past there when we went to see the ‘armada’ of boats on Saturday. OnTV last evening they showed divers fetching up tables etc. I hope they can rescue the old boat. Glad you like the blog!
I love the vegetarian salmon and crab option! On my travels in Singapore – I went for the ‘tofu’ option – only to be served ‘tofu with beef’!
Reminds me of the Dutch tomato soup….with meat balls!
