…the message is DON’T!
Since last month, August 2013, French-registered cars which are flashed in Spain will be sent an unwelcome letter on their return home – and the resultant fines imposed will be in line with Spanish law: 92 – 301€. Drivers going through red lights will get similar treatment.
There are already cross-border arrangements with Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg and these will extend further from November 7th to include all other EU countries except the UK, Denmark and Ireland.
Last year, 130,000 French drivers were recorded speeding in Spain and 450,000 Spaniards in France. From now on these motorists will be fined, although there is still no mechanism for imposing points on their licences.
Even though British number-plates are not included in this cross-border harmonisation, they can of course still be ‘nicked’ by the police for on-the-spot fines which means cash upfront or a trip to the nearest ATM.
The new Europe-wide system should be lucrative for the French: a quarter of PVs of the 12m issued in France went to people from outside the country.
‘Radars-sans-Frontieres’ will bring a handy 100m€ future income from speeding foreigners.
