Are you interested in witnessing a Provençal ceremony celebrating calissons? Or seeing some of the top world BMXers in action? That’s your decision tomorrow afternoon – Aix or Peynier?
If you opt for Aix, you could start your day with the monthly book market under the trees in the place d’Hotel de Ville. Stalls specialise in local titles, comics or sometimes old French school books. Usually something of interest. If you are in the mood for a little shopping, sacre bleu, after all these years Monoprix will be opening its doors every Sunday morning 9:00-12.15!
On a more traditional note, at 10.30 there is the ceremony at the Cathedral for the renewal of the vows made during the 17th century plague years. The procession itself starts at the tourist office at 14:00hrs and pauses at the place des 4 Dauphins for Provençal dancing. They arrive at the St Jean de Malte with the special statue of Mary, at 15:00, for the Blessing of the Calissons, a very colourful occasion which draws the crowds.
Crowds are expected too at Peynier for the ‘Vans Kill the Line’ finals which has attracted star BMX riders from all over the world. Aixcentric fils is a devotee and has in his time terrified his mother by soaring over enormous jumps on a tiny bike. This year he is behind the camera so I will be able to enjoy the stunning displays of skill and daring – a great spectator sport. (Photo from Joe Alderson)
